Single Process Colour: When Solid Colour Is All You Need

Rich, even hair colour from single process application

Not every colour transformation needs to be complex. Sometimes the right choice is a clean, even colour applied uniformly from root to tip — and knowing when that is the case is as much a skill as knowing how to do it.

What Single Process Colour Is

Single process colour is a single application of hair colour to the entire head, applied root to tip, in one consistent formulation. It does not involve selecting individual strands, creating gradients, or separating sections for different treatments. One colour, applied evenly, processed, rinsed, done.

This simplicity is a feature, not a limitation. Single process is the correct service for grey coverage, for shifting your overall tone from one shade to another, for refreshing colour that has faded, and for anyone who wants a clean, uniform result rather than dimension and movement.

It is faster than highlights, balayage, or Airtouch. A typical appointment runs 60 to 90 minutes. It is less chemically complex than any of the lightening services, which generally means less processing stress on the hair — particularly important if you are in Bali for a short stay and want a service with fast, reliable results and a straightforward recovery.

How It Differs from Other Techniques

Where highlighting and balayage add variation — creating lighter strands within a darker base, building dimension — single process creates uniformity. Every strand is the same shade after the application. The result is a rich, consistent tone across the full head.

This is particularly effective for darker shades. Deep brunette, rich auburn, vivid black — these shades look their best as a uniform field of colour rather than with internal variation. A single process application in these tones produces a depth and intensity that no multi-step technique matches.

Grey coverage is where single process is unmatched by any other technique. Grey hair has no pigment, which makes it resistant to blending into any graduated or selective colour approach — the grey strands simply do not lift or deposit the way pigmented hair does. A permanent single process colour applied over grey produces clean, predictable coverage. A highlight or balayage over grey coverage typically still requires a single process base first.

For anyone coming from a combination colour background who wants to simplify their maintenance, a single process in a shade that matches or is close to their current overall tone is the most direct route to a low-maintenance result that grows out without creating a multicolour patchwork.

The Chemistry: Permanent, Semi, and Demi

Not all single process colour is the same at the chemistry level, and the difference affects how long it lasts and what it can do.

Permanent colour uses an oxidative process: the developer opens the cuticle, the colour molecules enter the cortex, and a chemical reaction forms larger pigment molecules that are trapped inside the hair shaft. Permanent colour changes the hair's actual pigment structure and lasts until it grows out — typically four to six weeks before root regrowth becomes visible. It can lift hair slightly (depending on developer strength used) as well as deposit, which is why it can take dark hair a shade or two lighter as well as covering grey or shifting tone.

Semi-permanent colour does not use developer and does not open the cuticle. Colour molecules coat the outside of the hair shaft rather than penetrating it. The result fades gradually with each wash, typically over six to eight shampoo sessions. Semi-permanent is suitable for colour refreshing and tone adjustment on hair that is close to the target shade, but it cannot cover grey hair reliably and cannot lift.

Demi-permanent (or deposit-only) colour uses a low-volume developer that allows some light penetration of the cuticle but does not lift existing pigment. It lasts longer than semi-permanent — typically 15 to 25 washes — and provides better grey coverage than semi, though not the full coverage of permanent. It deposits a richer tone than semi-permanent without the commitment or structural change of permanent colour.

Your colourist will recommend the appropriate formulation at consultation based on your starting shade, your grey percentage, and how long you need the result to last.

Maintenance and Aftercare in the Tropics

Single process colour in Bali faces the same environmental pressures as any colour service: UV accelerates fade, salt water strips lipids from the cuticle and carries colour molecules out with it, and chlorine oxidises deposited pigment. The fundamentals of aftercare apply here consistently.

Sulphate-free shampoo extends the life of any colour deposit. Sulphates are surfactants aggressive enough to strip colour molecules along with dirt and oil. Standard supermarket shampoos almost universally contain sulphates. Switching to a professional sulphate-free formula is the single highest-return product change for maintaining colour in Bali's wash-and-repeat climate.

UV-protective hair products — sprays, oils, leave-in conditioners with UV filters — slow the photooxidation that causes permanent colour to fade and shift toward unwanted tones. For the full environmental management protocol, including salt water, chlorine, and humidity, the hair care in Bali guide covers each threat in detail.

For colour-treated hair that has moved toward lowlights or correction territory — banding, uneven fading, or tonal shift — a consultation before your next single process application ensures the new application is formulated correctly for the existing state of the hair rather than applied over a compromised base.

A single process touch-up at four to six weeks maintains root coverage cleanly. Waiting longer typically means a more visible line of demarcation between the regrowth and the existing colour.
